“Bad libraries build collections. Good libraries build services. Great libraries build community.

Building Safer, More Sustainable Library Systems Through Leadership and Practice.

I partner with library leaders to design and implement systems that support staff in creating safe, welcoming, and consistent environments for their communities.

Libraries reflect the full complexity of the communities they serve. While we cannot control what comes through the doors, we can design systems that prepare staff to respond with clarity, confidence, and consistency.

Too often, safety is approached as a reactive function—relying on security presence or emergency response. While those tools have a role, they are not the foundation of a safe library.

Sustainable safety is built through everyday practices, clear expectations, and leadership alignment.

My work focuses on helping libraries move beyond reactive models toward proactive, trauma-informed approaches that:

  • Support staff in navigating customer behavior

  • Reduce escalation through early, consistent intervention

  • Align policies, practices, and leadership expectations

  • Create environments that are both welcoming and predictable

Through a trauma-informed and human-centered lens, I work with organizations to build systems that support staff before, during, and after challenging interactions—because lasting change happens when leadership leads it, and systems reinforce it.
